Challenge

In its quest to deliver “a better way” to support transformation in the care and assisted living space, Archangel faced challenges on multiple levels, beginning with the fundamental task of supporting service providers in a time of aging populations, care staff shortages, and public sector budget pressures.

Existing resource-intensive and reactive “button and box” models were both insufficient and inefficient. Collecting data was hampered by an analog system that was technologically limited and not user-friendly. Many users were reluctant or unable to press buttons when they needed help, and any data that was gathered required manual interpretation. To overcome these obstacles, Archangel was in search of a proactive, efficient, cloud-native solution.

They wanted to use passive sensors to provide live insights – replacing reactive legacy buttons and detectors. The vision was a hybrid human- and AI-driven platform to monitor individual behaviour patterns, detect anomalies, and intervene early – like spotting signs of a UTI before symptoms escalate – but the implementation was complicated.

Faced with a fragmented ecosystem where each sensor had different integration requirements, Archangel was spending more time identifying and integrating sensors than on developing essential features in their core platform. They needed a partner to manage the sensors reliably, and at scale. Semtech’s AirVantage Smart Sensing fits the bill.

One thing we really love about Smart Sensing is its simple use case-based approach. We only have to come in and specify a need, such as detecting electricity use. Then the Semtech team will suggest compatible sensing devices. Knowing that those devices will be reliable, and the data format and configuration will be standardized, well, that’s a huge relief for us.
