Customer Profile

Founded in 1991 in Germany, Compu-House is an information technology provider whose services and solutions include telecommunications, networking, infrastructure, mobile solutions, backup and recovery, monitoring, and security and surveillance services. It has a robust partner network in both telecom and IT.

Objectives

Compu-House construction industry clients were experiencing growing construction site losses from both vandalism and theft. These losses meant clients had unplanned capital expenditures to replace damaged
or stolen equipment, and the resulting construction delays were also very costly. Compu-House wanted to develop a reliable and stable solution to minimize client losses.

Results

Partnering with artec technologies and Semtech, Compu-House created SEC WATCH, an AI-supported video surveillance system that enables clients to:

  • Decrease theft and vandalism
  • Remotely monitor construction sites
  • Expediently involve law enforcement
    when appropriate
  • Increase remote security team efficiency
    with AI

Introduction

Theft from construction sites costs the industry billions of dollars globally. In the U.S. alone, recent loss estimates are as high as $1 billion annually. In Germany, the Federal Criminal Police recorded 23,959 cases of theft from construction sites in 2023, with 13,533 of them considered serious thefts. Compu-House is a technology solutions and services firm that offers security and surveillance services to its European clients. It provides technology services to construction companies and became aware of these security and loss issues.

Challenge

German-based dhib (dechant hoch und ingenieurbau GmbH) is not immune to equipment loss. As a family-owned construction company with large building projects in Austria, Germany, and Sweden, dhib needed a way to minimize losses from both theft and vandalism on its sites. After an excavator bucket was stolen in broad daylight, they turned to Compu-House for help. Dhib tried other solutions such as advanced video monitoring, but they wanted something more stable, reliable, and easy for managers to use. The solution could not depend on Wi-Fi availability since robust IT infrastructure is often missing on construction sites.

The SEC WATCH system is easy to install and use, and the software allows comfortable remote access to analyze construction progress. Since deploying video surveillance with SEC WATCH, our customer has increased the safety of their construction sites and has had no additional thefts. SEC WATCH gives us confidence that annual loss will decrease by more than 90%.

Solution

Compu-House tech partner artec technologies AG recommended the Semtech AirLink XR80 5G router as a potential solution for dhib and other construction industry clients. The XR80 is rugged and purpose-built for industrial or outdoor environments and offers both 5G and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity. With the XR80 at the center, Compu-House created the SEC WATCH video surveillance system. Components connected to the XR80 router include:

  • VIVOTEK PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras
  • An outdoor bullet camera
  • One loudspeaker horn
  • 2 small LED spotlights
  • An AXIS I/O relay module
  • Integrated AI

All are mounted on a mobile tower and offer 360-degree, 24/7 monitoring with a detection range of 400 meters during the day and 200 meters at night. The solution has cellular connectivity (5G/LTE) to a security control center; Wi-Fi 6 is also available via the XR80 router.

Semtech’s AirLink Management Service platform (ALMS) offers remote access, including system configuration and resets. The operator can zoom into specific areas on site and use AI to detect and alert to any unauthorized activity. The end client dhib monitors construction during the day and uses AI support to monitor unauthorized access at night. The security service can address intruders directly. If they do not leave, the police are informed.

Benefits

Since implementing SEC WATCH in December 2023,

  • dhib has seen thefts decrease. Annual loss is expected to decrease by more than 90%.
  • Having AI support and a direct connection to a security control center eliminates the need for live onsite security, representing additional cost savings.
  • In addition to monitoring for vandalism or theft, the SEC WATCH Trace application can monitor daily progress and provide accurate data for supplier and contractor billing.

There are several other use cases for SEC WATCH:

  • KRITIS (critical infrastructure sectors such as energy, transportation, water, and waste)
  • Holiday parks
  • Parking lots and structures

Compu-House is spinning off SEC WATCH as an independent brand to meet the diverse surveillance needs of its clients.
