Sierra Wireless embedded module selected by NEC for integration in new notebook for Japan

The Sierra Wireless MC8780 embedded module provides mobile broadband connectivity for NEC’s LaVie G type J notebook computer

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR - TSX: SW)  today announced that NEC’s LaVie G type J  notebook computer with the integrated Sierra Wireless MC8780 embedded module is now certified and available for use on the NTT DoCoMo network.  The LaVie G type J notebook with the Sierra Wireless MC8780 module supports the NTT DoCoMo HSDPA flat rate service and is NEC’s first consumer platform with an embedded HSDPA module.

The Sierra Wireless MC8780 embedded module offers tri-band UMTS/HSPA and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE network access to enable roaming on mobile broadband networks worldwide. Operating on the NTT DoCoMo HSDPA network, the LaVie G type J notebook with the integrated MC8780 embedded module is capable of peak download speeds up to 3.6 Mbps (Megabits per second) and upload speeds up to 384 kbps.

The MC8780 PCI Express Mini Card embedded module offers connectivity to all three HSDPA/UMTS frequency bands (850, 1900, 2100 MHz) and all four EDGE/GPRS bands (850, 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz) used worldwide, allowing seamless global roaming on the best available network. The MC8780 offers receive diversity for improved fringe performance in Europe and Asia.
