Sierra Wireless MP rugged wireless modems provide vital and reliable communications links for 10 years

Public safety agencies rely on vehicle-mounted Sierra Wireless MP products for communications and location, enabling more efficient responses and improved safety for officers
IACP Conference, Miami Beach, Florida -September 26, 2005
Ten years after launching its first rugged wide area wireless modem in 1995, Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR - TSX: SW) MP vehicle-mounted wireless modems continue to be the choice of law enforcement and public safety agencies across North America to provide reliable wireless connectivity for their members, including the Missouri State Highway Patrol, which recently decided to upgrade to the Sierra Wireless MP 775 GPS modem from its existing solution with the MP 200 modem.

"In a patrol car, you need a ruggedized piece of equipment that's not going to get damaged when it gets jerked around a little bit," said Jim Biggerstaff, Director of Missouri State Highway Patrol's Communications Division, when asked why the Patrol selected the Sierra Wireless modems for its communications system. "The Sierra Wireless modem was leaps and bounds above any other products we evaluated."

"Sierra Wireless MP products are designed to withstand conditions that would compromise the performance of normal electronic equipment - including shock, vibration, humidity, and splash - making them ideal for situations like public safety, where maintaining the connection is critical and coddling electronic equipment is impossible," said Dan Schieler, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales for Sierra Wireless. "We are pleased to be able to help provide a vital communications link for public safety agencies across North America."

Sierra Wireless MP rugged wireless modems are vehicle mounted units designed for in-vehicle communications applications. Police officers using an MP series modem in conjunction with a laptop in a patrol car can receive dispatch information in real time and access state and national databases for drivers' licenses, vehicle registrations, and wanted persons lists. Vehicles equipped with the modems can be tracked, using the integrated GPS (global positioning satellite) receivers, improving safety for officers.

Sierra Wireless MP products are designed for use in the public safety, field service, and transportation industries and include an integrated GPS module for vehicle tracking. Built for demanding environments, the MP 775 GPS and the MP 555 GPS operate in extreme temperatures (-40C to +75C) and meet U.S. Military and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J1455 specifications for vibration, shock, drop, splash, and humidity. The MP 775 GPS provides access to EDGE and GSM/GPRS networks on all four frequency bands used worldwide. The MP 555 GPS offers connectivity to CDMA 1X networks, widely available across North America.
