Vancouver, Canada and Kuwait City -August 02, 2005
Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR - TSX: SW), Brightpoint Middle East, an authorized Sierra Wireless distributor based in Dubai, and Wataniya Telecom today announced that the AirCard® 775 wireless wide area network card is now available from Wataniya in Kuwait, for use on Wataniya's newly launched EDGE network. This demonstrates Sierra Wireless' continued commitment to distribute its EDGE technology through strategic global partners previously announced in the United States, China, South Africa, France, Italy, and the Netherlands.
Launched in 1999, Wataniya Telecom is the second licensed GSM mobile operator in the State of Kuwait, serving more than half the country's mobile users. The company delivers leading wireless data services in both Arabic and English, through alliances with global content providers and technology leaders. Traded on the Kuwait Stock Exchange, the company has more than 40,000 shareholders and a market capitalization of US$1.5 billion.
Wataniya Telecom recently launched a national EDGE network, the first of its kind in the region, migrating its entire customer base in Kuwait to significantly enhanced services. The company's customers are now provided with flexible wireless Internet access with the AirCard 775 card wherever they are in Kuwait or while roaming abroad.
"With the AirCard 775 wireless card, we are delivering our EDGE enhanced, leading and flexible services to our customer base. With a laptop computer, the AirCard 775, and Wataniya's EDGE service, our customers need never be completely out of touch with their colleagues or clients, and can download even large e-mail attachments quickly and easily," said Harri Koponen, General Manager and Chief Executive Officer, Wataniya Telecom. "We are glad to partner with Brightpoint and Sierra Wireless, which has been an established leader in the wireless data industry for many years, in introducing the AirCard product to the Kuwait market."
"We are pleased to work with Brightpoint Middle East and Wataniya Telecom to deliver the AirCard 775 card to mobile professionals in Kuwait," said Dan Schieler, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales for Sierra Wireless. "With global roaming capabilities and fast, reliable network access, the AirCard 775 and Wataniya's new EDGE service offers significant benefits to professionals who need to compete in an increasingly competitive global business environment, and especially for those who travel frequently."
Designed for mobile professionals who are heavy data users, the AirCard 775 fits into a PCMCIA slot in a laptop computer and provides access to email, the Internet, and corporate applications over an EDGE network at data rates averaging 100 to 130 kilobits per second (kbps), with peak rates up to 216 kbps. The AirCard 775 card also supports global roaming, functioning on EDGE and GSM/GPRS networks on all four GSM frequency bands (850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz) used worldwide, making it a powerful tool for frequent travelers who need to stay in touch with their colleagues and access corporate intranets or Web-based applications while they are away from the office.
