Wavecom Joins eCall, in-Vehicle Emergency Call Consortium

Issy-les-Moulineaux, France -April 21, 2005

Wavecom SA (NASDAQ: WVCM; Euronext Nouveau Marché Euronext: AVM; ISIN: FR0000073066), a leader in pre-packaged wireless communications solutions for automotive, industrial machine-to-machine and mobile professional applications, today announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with the European Commission’s eCall consortium aimed at reducing the number of fatalities and accidents on European roads.

As part of the European Commission’s eSafety Forum, established in 2003, the eCall consortium will develop an action plan to promote pan-European in-vehicle emergency call initiatives by using Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs).  The Commission recognizes the potential that in-vehicle communications can have on reducing the number of fatalities, the severity of injuries and the stress in post-crash situations, by speeding up the response time of emergency services.

Olivier Beaujard, Wavecom VP of Marketing stated, “we are extremely pleased that Wavecom has become part of this exciting and worthwhile initiative.  Drawing on our more than eight years experience in working with the automotive industry, our dedicated automotive team is fully committed to support and foster the expansion of the eCall initiative.   Wavecom will offer its customers in-vehicle wireless platforms designed to meet the requirements of all eCall specifications.”

The eCall Driving Group has developed a roll-out plan which includes (1) garnering memoranda of understanding from key stakeholders by June 2005, (2) agreeing on the business model and standards by the end of 2005, (3) full specification of in-vehicle systems by June 2006, (4) infrastructure and full-scale field tests during 2006 – 2007 and (5) eCall as standard equipment in all new vehicles starting from models introduced after September 2009.
