Wavecom Releases Open AT 3.0 Everywhere

Greater Flexibility for Wireless Application Developers Now Available in all Wavecom Wireless Modules
Issy-les-Moulineaux, France -February 10, 2005

Wavecom SA (NASDAQ: WVCM; Euronext Nouveau Marché Euronext: AVM; ISIN: FR0000073066), a leader in pre-packaged wireless communications solutions for automotive, industrial and mobile professional applications, today announced the release of version 3.0 of its powerful cellular embedded software application environment, Open AT. Unique in the market, Open AT has been specifically designed, from the start, for the machine-to-machine environment. It enables developers to embed applications directly onto Wavecom’s wireless modules, thus saving time and money by eliminating the need for external host processors, associated memory and other design costs.  The Open AT version 3.0 is now available in Wavecom’s full range of GSM and GPRS products for no additional license fees.

Olivier Beaujard, Group V.P. for Marketing at Wavecom commented on the newest version of Open AT, “With an installed base of over 1 million wireless-enabled machines using Wavecom’s Open AT software platform since its launch in 2001, it is quickly becoming an industry standard,” he added, “this truly powerful software environment allows developers to start developments at no cost and to customize any industrial wireless application with ease, accuracy and assured security.”

Wavecom continues to break new ground in the industrial wireless sector by expanding the software environment and making communication between machines easier and more flexible.  The new Open AT 3.0 software environment incorporates many new features that customers have asked for, including:

  • Improved power management – power consumption can be reduced as much as 10 times by using power-saving mode features such as:  disconnected and/or 32kHz
  • New APIs (Application Programming Interface) for GPS allowing customers to create entire tracking systems directly on the Wismo Q2501 module which integrates GSM/GPRS and GPS.
  • Improved connectivity – enabling developers to create applications using multiple ports:  one port for AT Commands and the second port for other functions such as voice and data or subsystem controls to run a separate GPS or Bluetooth device.
  • Improved DOTA (Download over the Air) – via the new application and data storage service, Open AT 3.0 offers twice the capacity for DOTA services for downloads, up to 512 Kbytes. This e-maintenance service allows customers to upgrade applications over-the-air that can automatically correct bugs or release new features within their Open AT application by extending available memory.
  • Improved development environment using enhanced graphic tools to make it easier for developers to develop and test Open AT applications.

Wavecom customers are talking about Open AT:

"Open AT has provided us with a platform whereby we can reduce the complexity and associated cost of our GSM routing products. This not only allows us to remain competitive in a market which is extremely cost sensitive, but also provides us with enough power to add the many features which this market demands,"  stated Grant Bradley, Product Development Executive at Psitek, a South African-based developer and manufacturer of telecommunications solutions.

James Wu, CEO of Fleety in Shanghai, China, commented “Open AT has been at the core of our product strategy, enabling us to rapidly penetrate the Chinese taxi fleet market.  We have used Open AT to reduce the total system cost of our TaxiOne dispatch and iFLOW fleet management products and optimise the total cost of ownership of the service offer for our customers.  We have also recently started development to refresh our Open AT applications Over The Air with the new features available in Open AT 3.0, allowing us to role out new functionality directly to our customers without physically recalling hundreds of taxis.”

Wavecom invites you to come and see the AMR (Automatic Meter Reading) demonstration that will be on display in Wavecom’s booth (Hall 1, stand B25) during the 3GSM Congress in Cannes, France. This “proof of concept” clearly demonstrates how Wavecom wireless modules combined with Open AT can reduce the total cost of ownership and the physical size of the end product.

Open AT 3.0 is available from Wavecom now on all GSM and GPRS products.
