GSL Selects Wavecom for Expansion of World's Smallest Palm Powered Smartphone Range

Smartphone growth in China leads to increased market opportunities.
Issy-les-Moulineaux, France and Hong Kong, PRC-February 23, 2004
Wavecom SA (NASDAQ: WVCM; Euronext: AVM; ISIN: FR0000073066) today announced that it has been selected by Group Sense PDA Limited (GSPDA), the third largest seller of handheld computers in Asia and the PDA subsidiary of Group Sense (International) Limited (GSL, HKEx: 0601), to supply its PDA Development Lab solutions for use in new models of GSPDA’s successful Palm powered smartphone.

Following the launch in September 2003 of the world’s smallest Palm powered smartphone, Xplore G18, GSL has selected Wavecom as its wireless technology provider to expand its range of Palm powered smartphones.

“When the two worlds of PDA and mobile phone converged to create the smartphone, GSL was quick to realise that the key to establishing a foothold in this rapidly growing market was to provide the functionality of a PDA in the form factor of a phone” said Mr K. H. Lee, Executive Director of GSPDA.

GSL has selected Wavecom's WISMO Quik technology for its new smartphone Xplore G88. Xplore G88 is a fully-featured smartphone that integrates traditional Palm OS PIM functionality and telephony features in a sleek and compact form factor. The Xplore G88 runs Palm OS4.1.2 and features a built-in 320 x 240 digital camera with digital zoom; 16 MB RAM/16 MB ROM/22 MB Flash Internal Memory Card; a high quality 2.2 inch D-TFD 65K colors LCD screen; and SMS, MMS, WAP, e-mail and Java support. It also features a numeric slide keypad and a one-handed 5-way jog dial navigator to fit the habits of today’s mobile phone users.

Mr Lee, continued by saying: "We are very pleased with the market response to our first Palm powered smartphone and the decision to expand the range using Wavecom's extensive portfolio of Development Lab solutions is indicative of the commitment of both our companies to continue to aggressively address this exciting market potential. Our sales are growing well in Singapore and Hong Kong and we have recently signed an agreement to sell under a third-party brand in China. We are also just starting to see the benefits of providing the products in the European market."

"Wavecom have worked with GSL for more than 3 years now and they continue to be extremely innovative in both their business approach and product design," said Mr Jamie Garroch, Marketing Manager for Wavecom in Asia. "Since the WISMO Quik contains all the functionality related to the mobile network, it enables GSL to concentrate on their product design and marketing while alleviating the pressure of meeting all of the complex GSM and GPRS requirements".
