Wavecom and eDevice launch the first integrated GSM/GPRS and Internet solution for use in M2M communication

Issy-les-Moulineaux, France-November 05, 2002
Wavecom SA (Nasdaq: WVCM; Euronext Nouveau Marche: 7306), the world’s number one provider of integrated wireless modules, and eDevice, a Franco-American company specializing in the development of on-board Internet technologies, today announced the launch of an Internet connectivity solution on WISMO™, for use in the M2M (machine to machine) market.

The partnership between the two companies, which began last year, now sees the birth of the first GSM/GPRS offering with IP connectivity and integrated application protocols. By taking advantage of their complementary expertise, Wavecom and eDevice developed this partnership to come up with a joint offer. Taking into account the high demand for IP connectivity, as well as the GSM/GPRS function in M2M markets, Wavecom and eDevice have developed an Internet connectivity solution for all communication devices and automobile equipment via GSM and GPRS networks, through the use of SmartStack™ integrated technology in WISMO modules. IP technology in M2M enables significant reduction of communication costs, development of connectivity, multi-point communication and the benefits of using standard non-proprietary tools.

eDevice has thus adapted its technology so that it is loaded into Wavecom products through the MUSE Platform/Open AT, the embedded software development platform developed by Wavecom that allows applications to be embedded directly onto the module. The solution developed supports different application protocols as well as TCP/IP, enabling the sending of e-mails and files via Internet. The developers also have the possibility of loading their applications directly into the module, thus reducing development costs and time.

This partnership thus allows Wavecom and eDevice today to be the first market players to launch this new solution: a GSM/GPRS module with IP connectivity, optimised in terms of size, price and functionalities.

“Our partnership with eDevice allows Wavecom to launch a unique product offering for M2M applications,” adds Hervé Gagnard, Group Vice President for Corporate Development and Communications of Wavecom.

“Given the rapid growth of the M2M sector, it was important for us to propose an offer for this sector. With Wavecom, we have succeeded in developing a product adapted to the software in both companies and to the requirements of our clients. For eDevice, the objective was to have the back-up of a reference partner in the world of M2M connectivity and it was naturally to Wavecom that we turned” said Yves Abitbol, Vice President Business Development of eDevice.

Thanks to this new offer, numerous applications projects are already under development in the sectors of automatic distribution, industrial inspections, fleet management, or security systems. No doubt that the initiative by Wavecom and eDevice is going to pave the way for other initiatives and applications in this rapidly growing sector.

Wavecom products integrating IP connectivity will be available in early 2003.
