With network operators steadily reallocating spectrum from 4G to 5G and concentrating investment on 5G Standalone (SA) deployments, 4G lifecycle exposure is a growing planning consideration for critical infrastructure operators. A related post explored that risk and made the case for 5G Reduced Capability (5G RedCap) as a practical forward path. The Upfront Cost Instinct

Today, 4G hardware can cost less than a comparable 5G RedCap device. For organizations deploying at scale, that gap can look significant on a procurement spreadsheet. 

That comparison only holds if both devices complete their deployment lifecycle without intervention. Focusing only on upfront hardware costs can create a misleading picture of the true deployment economics. 

For infrastructure expected to remain operational for 10–15 years, the bigger question is: “What happens when the network evolves before the device lifecycle ends?”

At that point, your devices are two-thirds through their expected service life and you are back in the field regardless: dispatching technicians, coordinating downtime windows, reinstalling, and recertifying hardware across every site.

Hardware is only part of that cost. For infrastructure in remote, hazardous or difficult-to-access locations (pipelines, substations, offshore assets), field labor and operational downtime often dwarf the device cost itself. At 100 units, the impact is already significant. At the scale many utilities and oil and gas operators deploy, it becomes a material budget event. 

Model the same scenario with 5G RedCap deployed from day one, and devices run natively on 5G when available, fall back to LTE during the transition, and complete the full 10-year lifecycle without forced field intervention for hardware replacement.

When LTE Still Makes Sense

The question is specifically about net-new, long-life infrastructure in demanding environments, and whether the upfront saving justifies the mid-lifecycle exposure.

It’s the one that minimizes operational disruption, reduces replacement risk, aligns with long-term network evolution, and supports the expected device lifecycle. 

That’s why more organizations are beginning to evaluate connectivity decisions through a lifecycle lens. For many long-life industrial deployments, when you model it, the case for 5G RedCap is stronger than the procurement sheet suggests.
