Sierra Wireless has selected the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ X16 LTE modem for its next-generation EM/MC Series embedded modules . The Snapdragon X16 is the first commercially announced Gigabit Class LTE chipset designed to deliver fiber-like LTE Category 16 download speeds of up to ~1 Gbps. This high-speed functionality will provide our customers with the fastest access to global cellular networks for their device to cloud IoT deployments.

“We are excited to work with leading wireless companies like Sierra Wireless to push the limits and continue to innovate in connectivity solutions,” said Fram Akiki, senior director, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “Our collaboration on this module will allow OEMs to integrate and launch products using our state-of-the art Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ X16 modem, and bring their customers unprecedented wireless broadband speeds as well as many other breakthrough features to advance Consumer, Enterprise Mobility and IoT products.”

“This is our fifth generation LTE development with Qualcomm Technologies, and we will be working closely with them to integrate Snapdragon X16 technology into our future products,” said Dan Schieler, Senior Vice President, OEM Solutions, Sierra Wireless. “Our customers rely on our embedded modules to deploy on the fastest cellular networks with a future-proof path to next-generation technologies. This partnership extends our leadership in LTE, including LTE Unlicensed and LTE Assisted Access.”

Other advanced features that Snapdragon X16 will enable include:

  • Up to 4×20 MHz downlink Carrier Aggregation across FDD and TDD spectrum with 256-QAM, and 2×20 MHz uplink carrier aggregation plus 64-QAM for uplink speeds up to 150 Mbps.
  • Modem supports Snapdragon All Mode (LTE FDD, LTE TDD, WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, EV-DO, CDMA 1x, and GSM/EDGE), LTE dual SIM, LTE Broadcast, HD Voice over LTE (VoLTE) with single radio voice call continuity to 3G and 2G.
  • LTE speeds that give users greater access to breakthrough features, such as HD video streaming and faster, more seamless access to cloud-based storage, applications and services.

The EM and MC Series from Sierra Wireless offer unprecedented LTE speeds, bandwidth, and network performance on PCI Express Mini Card (MC Series) and M.2 (EM Series) form factors commonly used in networking equipment. The next-generation EM and MC series featuring X16 are expected to sample in 2017.
