Fully integrated LPWA solutions for IoT products

Start with Sierra

LPWA technologies are low cost and low power, and their extended reach make it easy for customers to begin designing connected IoT products in applications where previously cellular wasn’t a fit. Start with Sierra to harness the power of LPWA technology for your business.

Analysts are predicting 20 billion Internet of Things (IoT) devices to come online by 2020, and with that the question becomes what is the technology that will connect all those devices? Enter low-power wide-area (LPWA) cellular technologies – LTE-M (Cat-M1) and NB-IoT (Cat-NB1/2) solutions to enable new business models that improve safety, efficiency and resource management.

LPWA eliminates many of the challenges companies face as it addresses a broad range of use cases, such as wearables, appliances, and health care devices - making it cost effective to connect millions and even billions of devices around the planet.

Today there are two leading LPWA technologies that are trialing now with network operators globally and can be deployed with simple software upgrades to their LTE networks:

Cat-M1 (LTE-M), a 4G LTE only technology supporting up to 350kbps data rates, voice, roaming, and ideal for real-time fixed or mobile applications.

  • Focused on very low data rates
  • Ability to use both 4G and 2G spectrum
  • Ideal for simpler static sensor applications

Cat-NB1 (NB-IoT), a 4G LTE and 2G technology supporting up to 65kbps data rates and ideal for simpler static sensor applications.

  • Highest bandwidth of any LPWA technology
  • Ability to support voice and roaming on 4G spectrum
  • Ideal for real-time fixed or mobile applications

The AirPrime HL Series and WP Series of embedded modules for Cat-M1 and Cat-NB1 cellular networks are fully compliant with the 3GPP Release 13 standard. The first modules will be the HL Series, with the WP Series following in 2018 providing customers the option of building their entire IoT application within the WP module.

The HL77xx module series are trialing today with many network operators around the globe and will be used in the first commercial deployments in 2017. Contact us below if you are interested in deploying on Cat-M1 or Cat-NB1 networks. Many of our customers are designing now with 4G LTE Cat-1 modules in the CF3™ form factor so they are ready for the LPWA revolution in 2017/18.
