Windows98/ME users may experience long delays during installation of AirCard or any other PCMICIA NIC card
This document covers the following products:
Sierra Wireless AirCard® 300 Sierra Wireless AirCard® 550 & AirCard® 555 Sierra Wireless AirCard® 750
Description
Installing the AirCard [or any other PCMCIA LAN/NIC card] on systems with an internal network adaptor running Windows 98 or Windows ME may experience long delays during the installation process that lead the user to believe the PC has stopped responding.
Users may believe the PC has stopped responding and be tempted to abort the installation by re-booting the PC. This will result in a failed installation; it is important the installation process is allowed to complete normally. The delays appear to be due to the Windows operating system, and there is currently no work-around available other than to wait for the process to complete.
Symptoms
The first of these delays occurs just after the user inserts the card after being instructed to do so by the setup program. During the card detection process, a message box indicates that the PC is detecting the Card Parent and for several minutes, the PC may stop responding. After this, the installation will continue normally.
The second of these delays occurs upon first card insertion after the reboot. The user is instructed to eject the card and then the PC is re-booted. After the re-boot, when the card is re-inserted, the PC may appear to freeze for several minutes, after which Watcher will launch as it normally does.
After these initial installation delays, the AirCard will function normally.
Resolution/Instructions
There is currently no work-around available other than to wait for the process to complete. The delays appear to be due to the Windows operating system.
