How to Set Up a Virtual Private Network - VPN

This document is intended to provide minimal instructions for setting up a VPN client. Please note that Sierra Wireless does not provide any support for VPNs. If you are setting up a 3rd party VPN connection, please refer to your VPN client documentation or contact your network administrator for further support.

How to set up a VPN

Windows XP

  • Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel and double click on the Network Connections icon
  • Click on "Create a New Connection" and click "Next"
  • Select "Connect to the network at my workplace" and click "Next"
  • Select "Virtual Private Network connection" and click "Next"
  • Type the name for this connection and click "Next"
  • Select "Do not dial initial connection" and click "Next"
  • Type the host name or address of the VPN Server and click "Next"
  • Select "My use only" and click "Next", then click "Finish".
  • Enter "User Name" and "Password" click "Connect"
If you are using a different domain name than your computer is already signed in, do the following:
  • Click on "Properties" in your VPN connection.
  • Select "Options" tab and check "Include Windows logon domain" and click "OK"
  • Enter "Domain" and click "Connect"
Windows 2000
  • Go to Start>Settings>Network and Dial Up connections.
  • Click on Make New Connection, click Next.
  • Select "Connect to a private network through the Internet" and click "Next"
  • Select "Do not dial initial connection" and click "Next"
  • Type the host name or address of the VPN Server and click "Next"
  • Select "Only for myself" and click "Next"
  • Type the name for this connection and click "Finish".
  • Enter "User Name" and "Password" click "Connect"
If you are using a different domain name than your computer is already signed in, do the following:
  • Click on "Properties" in your VPN connection.
  • Select "Options" tab and check "Include Windows logon domain" and click "OK"
  • Enter "Domain" and click "Connect"
Windows 98/ME

If you do not have Microsoft VPN Adapter installed, please refer to section on Installing Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter.

  • Go to Start ->Programs->Accessories->Communication-> DialUpNetworking.
  • Double click on Make New Connection.
  • Type the name of the connection and select "Microsoft VPN Adapter" then click Next.
  • Enter the name or address of the VPN Server and click "Next", then click Finish
Windows 95

If you do not have Microsoft VPN Adapter installed, please refer to section on Installing Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter.

  • Go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories and click on Dial Up Networking.
  • Double click on Make New Connection.
  • Type the name of the connection and select "Microsoft VPN Adapter" then click "Next".
  • Enter the name or address of the VPN Server and click "Next", then click "Finish".

Installing Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter

  • Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel and double click on the Network icon
  • Highlight "Sierra Wireless GPRS Adapter" and click "Add"
  • Select "Adapter" and click "Add"
  • Select "Microsoft" and "Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter" and click "OK"
  • Restart computer
