Ensure the PC (PCMCIA) Slots are Enabled:
- Select Start > Settings > Control Panel from the taskbar and double-click the PC Card icon.
- If a window called PC Card (PCMCIA) Properties is displayed, the slots are enabled. Close the PC Card Properties window, remaining in the Control Panel, and proceed to the next section: Ensure the TCP/IP Protocol is Installed.

Ensure the TCP/IP Protocol is Installed:
- In the Control Panel, double click the Network icon.
- On the Configuration tab, look for a TCP/IP entry (for any device). If a TCP/IP entry exists, skip to the section: Load the Software. Otherwise, proceed to step 3 for instructions on installing the protocol.
- Click Add. A window labeled Select Network Component Type is displayed.
- Select Protocol and click Add. A window labeled Select Network Protocol is displayed.
- Under Manufacturers select Microsoft and under Protocols select TCP/IP. Click OK.
- You should then see a TCP/IP entry on the Configuration tab of the Network window. Click OK.
- You may be prompted for your Windows CD. If this occurs, insert the CD in your CD-ROM drive.
Load the Software:
- If the AirCard CD is not already in the CD-ROM drive, insert it and allow it to auto-run. A wizard guides you through the installation.
Insert the AirCard:

Once the wizard completes the installation, the AirCard is ready to be configured with Wireless Expert. See the User Guide for details or simply run Wireless Expert and fill in the configuration screen's blank fields.
NOTE: You require a host computer to install the AirCard software. Windows CE Services must be installed on the computer you are using as the host computer before you begin. (Refer to Microsoft's "The Handheld PC Companion" manual for instructions.) You also require the serial cable that connects the handheld to a host.
Once the AirCard software is installed on the host computer, CE Services automatically initiates the download as soon as the handheld is connected. You can choose to connect the handheld to the host while you install the software, as described below, or to install the software on the host and connect the handheld later.
Turn the Handheld On and Connect it to the Host:
- Turn the handheld computer on.
- Connect the serial cable to the host (desktop) computer.
- Connect the serial cable to the handheld computer.
Load the Software on the Host Computer:
- If the AirCard CD is not already in the CD-ROM drive, insert it and allow it to auto-run. A wizard guides you through the installation.
- When the wizard completes the installation, disconnect the serial cable and reset the handheld computer. (See your handheld computer manual if you require instructions on resetting.)
Insert the AirCard:
- Carefully connect the antenna, and insert the card into the slot.
Upon completion of this step the AirCard is ready to be configured with Wireless Expert. See the User Guide for details or simply run Wireless Expert and fill in the configuration screen's blank fields.
Ensure the PC card slots are enabled.
NOTE: When installing the AirCard software on a computer that has a PC Card Manager (and some laptop models require this type of software with Windows NT), this step may not be necessary. More information is provided in the User Guide on the CD. If your computer does not have a PC Card Manager follow these steps
- Select Start > Settings > Control Panel from the taskbar.
- Double click the PC Card icon.
- If the PC Card PCMCIA Properties window displays, the slots are enabled. Close all windows and proceed to the section: Select an IRQ and I/O Space.
- If the PC Card PCMCIA Wizard launches, this indicates that the slots have not yet been enabled. The Wizard guides you through the process of enabling them.
Select an IRQ and I/O Space:
Windows NT requires you to specify the IRQ and I/O Space to be used by the AirCard. The Windows NT Diagnostics indicates the availability of IRQs and I/O Space. To get to this screen, select Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Windows NT Diagnostics. (Note that this screen does not report all allocations of IRQs and I/O Space. In some cases resources are allocated without being reported here. If the AirCard is not functional after installation, you may want to try selecting a different IRQ and I/O Space.)
- To display a list of IRQs that are allocated to other devices, select the Resources tab and click the IRQ button. Identify and make note of an IRQ (3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 or 15) that is not allocated to another device.
- To display a list of I/O space that is allocated, click the I/O Port button. The AirCard requires I/O space in one of these ranges:
| 0400 - 047F | 0480 - 04FF | 0500 - 057F |
| 0580 - 05FF | 0600 - 067F | 0680 - 06FF |
| 0700 - 077F | 0780 - 07FF | 0800 - 087F |
| 0880 - 08FF | 0980 - 09FF | 0900 - 097F |
| 0A00 - 0A7F | 0A80 - 0AFF | 0800 - 0B7F |
| 0B80 - 0BFF | 0C00 - 0C7F | |
Identify and make note of a range of I/O space that has not been allocated to another device.
Enable Network Support and Install TCP/IP:
- Go to the control panel (Start > Settings > Control Panel from the taskbar) and double click the network icon.
If networking has been installed, a window with five tabs is displayed. Select the Adapters tab and the Add button. Proceed to Step 2.
If networking has not been installed, a prompt is displayed asking if you want to install it. Click Yes. A wizard guides you through the process. Make these selections: - Select the option, Wired to the network.
- At the screen that triggers Windows NT to search for a Network Adapter click the Select from list button.
- Click the Have Disk button and enter the path d:\WinNT where d is your CD ROM drive letter.
- A screen labeled Select OEM Option displays on which the Sierra Wireless AirCard CDPD PCMCIA Adapter is highlighted. As the wizard guides you through the driver installation, make the following selections. (You may be prompted for your Windows NT CD. If this occurs, replace the AirCard CD with the Windows CD.)
- Ensure that the TCP/IP protocol is bound to the card.
- You are prompted for an IRQ and I/O Space. Enter the IRQ and I/O Space that you identified previously.
- You will be prompted as to whether you want to use or enable DHCP. Click Yes. (DHCP must be enabled for the AirCard adpater. See the User Guide for details.)
- When prompted to restart the computer, do so.
Load the Software:
- If the AirCard CD is not already in the CD-ROM drive, insert it and allow it to auto-run. A wizard guides you through the installation.
Insert the Card:
Unless you are using card management software that provides "hot swapping" of network cards, your computer must be off whenever you insert or eject the AirCard adapter.
- Carefully attach the antenna and insert the card into the slot.
Upon completion of this step, re-installing Service Pack 4 or 5 is recommended. The AirCard is then ready to be configured with Wireless Expert. See the User Guide for details or simply run Wireless Expert and fill in the configuration screen's blank fields.
