AirLink Announces Availability of Ethernet-Ready Intelligent, Rugged Wireless Modem

Raven-E provides customers with wireless alternative to cable or DSL for data backhaul

September 19, 2005

Hayward, CA –  AirLink Communications, Inc., a pioneer and leading provider of fixed and mobile wireless data solutions, today announced the commercial availability of its newest intelligent rugged modem, Raven Ethernet (Raven-E), designed to support Ethernet connectivity — one of the most widely implemented local area network (LAN) standards. This intelligent network appliance functions much like a wireless cable or DSL modem, delivering high-speed Internet connectivity for both fixed and mobile data applications. The Raven-E has already been certified with Sprint (CDMA 1x and iDEN), Verizon Wireless (CDMA 1x), Bell Mobility (CDMA 1x) and Cingular Wireless (GPRS/EDGE) networks. Additional carrier certifications are expected to be completed in 2005.

Interoperable with any standard Ethernet router, the Raven-E wireless rugged modem supports data transfer rates up to five times faster than typical dial-up connections depending on the wireless technology and network conditions. Equipped with the AirLink Embedded Operating System (ALEOS) intelligent software, the solution can be used in a diverse set of complex remote asset management applications such as homeland security, disaster recovery, SCADA, transportation and utility monitoring. The Ethernet-based device also supports Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) for local automatic IP assignment.

“The Raven-E simplifies wireless network integration with true plug and play capability,” commented Bob Rutemiller, vice president of Automation Consulting & Education, Inc., an AirLink Authorized Dealer. “The introduction of this product, with its ease of installation and network reliability, marks the beginning of a new era in remote SCADA applications using cellular as the preferred networking medium.”

The new AirLink modem is part of a large product seeding program to national retail chains, airlines and restaurants with branch locations across the country. The Raven-E functions as a gateway or network appliance, providing a robust, high-speed wireless alternative for primary and backup router connectivity in areas where cable and DSL options are too costly, not practical or simply not available.

“Adding Ethernet connectivity to our well-established Raven platform of intelligent rugged wireless modems gives our customers greater flexibility in building communications solutions that integrate seamlessly with networks, PCs or any Ethernet-ready device,” added Justin Schmid, senior vice president of marketing and business development. “It also opens the door to many new customer opportunities where Ethernet is the connection mode of choice like automation and other core M2M industrial applications.”
