Sierra Wireless 4G LTE Tri-Fi Hotspot, Nation’s First to Support 4G LTE, 4G WiMAX and 3G, Available May 18 Exclusively from Sprint

Sprint (NYSE: S) and Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) today announced the May 18 availability of the first-ever device to combine 4G connections over LTE and WiMAX networks, Sierra Wireless™ 4G LTE Tri-Fi Hotspot for the Sprint network. Sierra Wireless Tri-Fi Hotspot provides the best combination of speed and coverage to Sprint customers as the upcoming 4G LTE network expands and allows families, small businesses and traveling co-workers to easily share high-speed connections.

Beginning May 18, customers will be able to purchase a Sierra Wireless Tri-Fi Hotspot for $99.99 (excluding taxes) after a $50 mail-in-rebate with a two-year service agreement. Customers can purchase the device and sign up for 3G/4G plans at select Sprint retail stores, www.sprint.com, 1-800-SPRINT1 and through business sales.

Sprint data plans for the device start at $34.99 for 3GB of combined 3G/4G data while on the Sprint network. Customers also can choose the $49.99 plan with 6GB of combined 3G/4G data or $79.99 for 12GB of 3G/4G data, which deliver 20 percent more data for the same price as AT&T and Verizon’s similar plans.

With this versatile device, customers can extend their Sprint 3G/4G experience beyond their laptops to up to eight Wi-Fi enabled devices, such as cameras, music players, personal media players and portable game consoles. In addition, its microSD™ slot allows teams to share files and presentations with network storage, and it can be used as a digital media server. It is simple to set up and connect with no software required.

Similar to Sierra Wireless’ Overdrive Pro™ 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot, this device offers a highly informative display screen that provides all the information needed for daily use, including the hotspot name and access code, battery life, number of devices connected, and whether the current connection to the network is 3G or 4G.

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) today announced the release of the ALEOS™ Application Framework, including an integrated development environment, feature-rich libraries, and a comprehensive set of tools that can be used to develop custom machine-to-machine (M2M) applications on top of the proven ALEOS embedded intelligence platform. The ALEOS Application Framework enables developers using AirLink® wireless gateways to integrate “intelligence on the edge” for more efficient, cost-effective deployment and operation of M2M solutions.

Initially available on the AirLink GX400 and GX440 gateways, the ALEOS Application Framework adds new programming capabilities to ALEOS, the intelligent embedded platform that enables setup, configuration, session persistence, and remote communications management for AirLink devices. Leveraging ALEOS as its foundation, the Application Framework allows third-party developers to take advantage of the inherent M2M capabilities of ALEOS and add their own proprietary applications. Furthermore, by integrating these applications with the Sierra Wireless AirVantage™ M2M Cloud Platform, developers can offer their customers true end-to-end M2M implementations.

The ability to run applications directly on the AirLink GX400/440 devices provides important cost and operational advantages for businesses. DNA first to launch new Sierra Wireless 4G LTE mobile hotspot in EMEA

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) and DNA today announced that the new AirCard® 762S mobile hotspot is now available from DNA. The DNA 4G WLAN Mokkula, as it is called, provides a 4G LTE connection for up to 10 Wi-Fi enabled devices at once on the DNA LTE network, ideal for a family or team of colleagues carrying multiple devices. Laptops, tablets, cameras, and portable gaming devices can be connected on-the-go to a high-speed connection fully capable of handling large files and media streaming. This is the first European launch for the AirCard 76xS product family, which was unveiled at Mobile World Congress in late February.

AirCard® 762S supports all network technologies DNA has to offer: 2G, 3G, and 4G. Monthly fee for the device is 6€, with data plans available from 13,90€ for 21 Mbps 3G; 19,90€ for 50 Mbps 4G DC + LTE; and 39,80€ for 100 Mbps 4G LTE.

DNA has the largest 4G DC network in Finland covering over 100 cities and almost 50% of the Finnish population. Its LTE network is available in the capital city Helsinki, as well as in Turku, Tampere and Hämeenlinna.

DNA 4G WLAN Mokkula is sold throughout Finland in DNA Kauppa stores.

Setting up and using the DNA 4G WLAN Mokkula mobile hotspot is quick and easy. Sierra Wireless unveils second generation of AirCard mobile hotspots for 4G LTE networks

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) today unveiled its newest family of AirCard® mobile hotspots for 4G LTE networks. Following on the success of the AirCard 754S, the new AirCard 760S, AirCard 762S, and AirCard 763S offer several feature enhancements, including an improved user interface, longer battery life, and expanded frequency band support across the product family, providing variants compatible with most common frequency band combinations around the world. The new mobile hotspots are expected to launch in select markets in North America, Australia, Asia, and Europe over the next couple of months.

“Our new generation of AirCard mobile hotspots has been built to make the user experience even better,” said Dan Schieler, Senior Vice President, Mobile Computing for Sierra Wireless. “We listened to customer feedback and have incorporated new and improved features to make our hotspots even easier to use and the fastest way to keep all your Wi Fi-enabled devices connected while on the move. The AirCard 76xS mobile hotspot product family supports up to 10 simultaneous Wi-Fi connections(1), providing ample support for a work team or family carrying multiple connected devices on a road trip. On a 4G LTE network it provides sufficient bandwidth to handle demanding applications like online gaming and streaming media.

Setup is quick and easy – there is no software to install, and device settings can be easily managed through a web browser. Once setup is complete, users can also connect devices with the push of a button – the Wi¬ Fi Protected Setup (WPS) button can securely connect a device without requiring a keyboard or large screen.

Enhancing the user experience
Sierra Wireless AirCard mobile hotspots are known for their informative and user-friendly display screens, which provide all the device information needed to connect and monitor the hotspot network connection and battery life. The new AirCard 76xS product family expands this user interface with the addition of a navigation button that scrolls through additional screens, providing access to messages and alerts, firmware status, and more detailed device information directly from the device itself without logging in to the web interface. This saves users time and makes it easier to use the hotspot with devices that may not have a standard web browser, such as Wi-Fi-enabled cameras or mobile gaming devices.

High-bandwidth often requires high power. The new AirCard 76xS product family comes standard with a 2000 milliampere-hour (mAh) battery, expected to improve battery life by approximately 30%(3). For heavy users, an extended battery (3600 mAh) will be available as an accessory purchase.

Other accessories available with the AirCard 76xS product family include a desktop charging cradle, an external MIMO antenna, and the AirCard Hub. The AirCard Hub, new from Sierra Wireless and sold separately, turns a mobile hotspot into a small office or residential gateway. It allows users to create a network at home or in the office, connecting up to 20 devices at once, between Wi Fi and Ethernet, to utilize the 4G LTE connection. The external MIMO antenna, also sold separately, offers an extra reception boost for users in areas with lower 4G LTE signal strength.

Launching on select networks worldwide
4G LTE networks are rolling out around the world, but vary widely by region in the frequency bands utilized. The AirCard 76xS mobile hotspot product family offers three variants, each with different frequency band combinations, offering nearly global coverage across the product line.

The AirCard 760S will be launched with Telstra in Australia and with NTT DOCOMO MVNO under the brand Netindex in Japan. The AirCard 762S is expected to launch with a mobile network operator in Scandinavia. The AirCard 763S will be launched on the Rogers LTE network in Canada. Exact timing of commercial availability varies by network, but is expected over the next couple of months.

Beeldhorloge selects Sierra Wireless module for wearable mHealth solution

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) today announced that Beeldhorloge, based in the Netherlands, has selected a Sierra Wireless AirPrime™ embedded module to provide wireless connectivity for the Pictowatch. The Pictowatch is designed to assist individuals with cognitive disorders – such as dyschrony (a condition whereby the sufferer is unable to recognize what time of day it is), ADHD, dementia and Asperger’s Syndrome – in managing daily routines.

The wireless element connects the Pictowatch to a web server where an online schedule is hosted and managed by the wearers’ caregivers, enabling real-time alerts to users when it is time to perform a certain action – to eat lunch, for example, or go to work. Alerts take the form of beeps, vibrations, and a digital display of pre-selected icons or photos representing the designated activity. The core of the watch is based on the Sierra Wireless AirPrime SL6087 EDGE wireless module, which provides access to the GSM network and is also responsible for running the Pictowatch application and producing the pictogram on the watch display.

In developing the Pictowatch with an AirPrime module, Beeldhorloge was able to take advantage of the Sierra Wireless Open AT Application Framework, which enables customers to embed their application directly onto the wireless module. By using the processing power already built into the wireless module, no separate microcontroller is required. This is the real value-add of the Sierra Wireless module: it combines GSM and microcontroller functions, acting both as modem and as central processor, so that the entire firmware and software of the Pictowatch is actually run on the module. For Beeldhorloge, this means that the Pictowatch can be smaller, use less power, and have a noticeably lower bill of materials than it would if a separate processor had been required.

With the AirVantage M2M Cloud Platform, Sierra Wireless also provides remote device management services, which allows Beeldhorloge to update the firmware and software on the watch remotely. The download-over-the-air approach proved vital in the testing phase of the Pictowatch, as prototypes could be modified while in the field.

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) and Panasonic today announced that Sierra Wireless will provide 4G LTE internal modems in the new rugged Toughpad™ A1 (#Toughpad), Android™-powered business tablet. The purpose-built slate, scheduled to start shipping in the spring of 2012, targets mission-critical and highly mobile workers in markets like aviation, construction, field sales and the public sector, where exposure to extreme environments is a constant challenge and the consequence of a failure is significant.

The 10” Toughpad A1, which features embedded security, enhanced device-management features, and integrated GPS, allows government and commercial enterprises, as well as small and medium businesses, to realize the true potential of tablet computing without sacrificing security and while delivering a high return on investment.

With integrated 4G LTE connectivity, Panasonic customers will be able to access stored online information and file reports from the field, share photos, stream video, and perform other high-bandwidth applications. For example, a technician addressing a particular problem on a piece of equipment would be able to use the Toughpad A1 tablet to access a training video stored on a corporate intranet, potentially saving considerable downtime and travel costs for multiple trips.

Integrating LTE into a mobile device presents challenges for manufacturers. Sierra Wireless, Inc. receives TSX approval for Normal Course Issuer Bid

Sierra Wireless, Inc. (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) (“Sierra Wireless” or the “Company”) today announced that it has received approval from the Toronto Stock Exchange (“TSX”) of its Notice of Intention to Make a Normal Course Issuer Bid (the “Bid”).

Pursuant to the Bid, Sierra Wireless may purchase for cancellation up to 1,564,914 of its common shares (“Common Shares”), or approximately 5% of the Common Shares outstanding as of the date of this announcement (representing 6.3% of the public float). As of December 1, 2011, there were 31,298,297 Common Shares of Sierra Wireless issued and outstanding, and the public float consisted of 24,975,375 Common Shares.

The purchases will be made by Sierra Wireless through the facilities and in accordance with the rules of the TSX and Rule 10b-18 under the U.S. Securities Exchange Act of 1934 (“Rule 10b-18”), and the price which Sierra Wireless will pay for any such Common Shares will be the market price at the time of acquisition. Sierra Wireless will make no purchases of Common Shares other than open market purchases or other means approved by the TSX. Other than block purchases allowable under the TSX rules, purchases will be subject to a daily restriction of 9,060 Common Shares, being 25% of the average daily trading volume for the preceding six months. In addition, purchases of Common Shares through the facilities of the Nasdaq Stock Market (“Nasdaq”) will be made in compliance with Rule 10b-18, which contains similar restrictions on the number of shares that may be repurchased based on the average daily trading volumes of the Common Shares on Nasdaq, subject to certain exceptions for block purchases. In addition, purchases may also be made through other Canadian marketplaces.

The actual number of Common Shares of the Company that are purchased for cancellation under the Bid, if any, and the timing of such purchases will be determined by the Company. The Board of Directors of Sierra Wireless believes that the proposed purchases are in the best interests of Sierra Wireless and are a desirable use of corporate funds.

Sierra Wireless and ACTIA collaborate on wireless platform for remote vehicle management and emergency services

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) and ACTIA today announced that the ACTIA Group, an international provider of value-added electronic equipment for the automotive market, has selected Sierra Wireless AirPrime™ AR Series modules to provide high-performance connectivity for its latest in-vehicle technology platform. AirPrime AR Series modules were designed and developed to achieve the highest level of compliance with automotive specifications, providing an unmatched level of quality and performance under harsh operating conditions.

The new platform, called the ACU-II (ACTIA Connect Unit second generation), uses the AirPrime module to allow drivers to connect and manage various functions of vehicles through a smartphone application, giving them the ability to, for example, lock or unlock their doors or turn on the heater. It also provides compliance with European and Russian eCall requirements and enables stolen vehicle tracking functionality to meet regulations in other areas such as Brazil.

Sierra Wireless launches world’s smallest cellular module

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) today announced a new addition to its line of embedded wireless modules, launching the industry’s smallest cellular solution for machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. Drawing on 15 years of experience in M2M, the Sierra Wireless AirPrime™ WS6318 module provides essential M2M connectivity in a smaller, simpler, and highly innovative package.

Delivering big things in small packages

Over the past several years, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have launched innovative connected devices and services, equipping everything from industrial equipment, to eBook readers, to cars and vending machines with cellular connectivity. Now, Sierra Wireless is helping customers extend M2M connectivity to places it has never been before.

Industry leaders join to provide open source tools and protocols to simplify development of M2M solutions

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) and the Eclipse Foundation today announced the formation of a new Industry Working Group to define and implement an open standard platform for the software development tools used in developing machine-to-machine (M2M) communications applications. IBM and Eurotech are also founding members of the M2M Industry Working Group, which is open to any organization with an interest in M2M solutions, including both vendors and potential clients.

“M2M communications represents an exciting and challenging opportunity to positively impact the way our world operates in fields as varied as energy management, transportation, and healthcare,” said Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation. “We believe the formation of this M2M Industry Working Group comes at a critical time. The open source contributions of M2M tools and protocols will help to reduce development time and costs, and ensure that mission critical systems maintain interoperability as deployments evolve over the lifetime of a project.”

The market for M2M solutions is growing, but rapid growth is hindered by incompatible platforms and protocols that require developers to continually reinvent solutions that have already been created. This situation slows innovation and creates maintenance and upgrade problems as deployments evolve over time. The founding members of the Industry Working Group believe the creation of open tools, open protocols, open interfaces and open application programming interfaces (APIs) are the best approach to addressing these problems, bringing tremendous value to the M2M ecosystem.

The initial open source contributions provide a common set of tools and APIs that simplify development of solutions across multiple environments (such as Linux, Java, and proprietary environments such as Open AT® from Sierra Wireless), as well as standard communications protocols. The benefit to M2M customers is more flexibility, with systems that are interoperable and don’t lock them into a long-term relationship with a single solution vendor. Sierra Wireless has made the first significant contribution to the Koneki project, providing a full-featured embedded development environment for the Lua programming language.

GÖRLITZ selects Sierra Wireless to provide cellular connection for metering router

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) today announced that GÖRLITZ AG, a leading manufacturer of advanced meter reading (AMR) and energy information management systems, has selected Sierra Wireless to provide the wireless connectivity solution for its Ethernet / GPRS router. The router connects to energy meters, allowing utilities to remotely collect energy usage data.

The Sierra Wireless solution combines an AirPrime™ Q2686 embedded wireless module with the Open AT® framework, which includes pre-packaged libraries that streamline development time and help customers like GÖRLITZ get their products to market quickly. GÖRLITZ was seeking an end-to-end solution that offered key elements already pre-packaged and proven, including TCP/IP stack, FTP, and network address translation (NAT). The company also wanted an operating system designed for machine-to-machine (M2M) metering applications, and application development needed to be simple, using standard C/C++ and easy-to-use development tools. Finally, GÖRLITZ required industrial grade hardware that was proven in energy applications. Sierra Wireless offered the quality hardware and the high level of technical support GÖRLITZ was seeking, along with extensive experience in providing wireless machine-to-machine solutions for energy applications.

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) and Telstra today announced that the Telstra USB 4G mobile broadband modem (also known as the Sierra Wireless AirCard® 320U) is now available to Telstra and BigPond customers, providing laptop users with access to the newly launched Telstra 4G LTE network. Rivaling wired broadband speeds, Telstra 4G allows customers to do more things simultaneously, like viewing online photos and checking email while downloading a favorite TV show. Business customers can take the network with them, multitasking on-the-go and quickly accessing shared folders and applications on a virtual private network.

Telstra CEO David Thodey said Australians could now access one of the world’s most advanced mobile networks delivering some of the fastest mobile download and upload speeds available anywhere.

“Today marks a new high-speed chapter in Australian mobile telecommunications. Telstra’s 4G network delivers mobile speeds scarcely imagined a decade ago, making it easier for people to connect with the things they need and love when on the move,” Mr. Thodey said.

Sierra Wireless to provide first 4G LTE devices for AT&T customers this summer

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) today announced it will supply the first devices for AT&T’s 4G LTE network. The AT&T Mobile Hotspot Elevate 4G (also known as the Sierra Wireless AirCard® 754S mobile hotspot) and the AT&T USBConnect Momentum 4G (the Sierra Wireless AirCard 313U USB modem) will enable mobile consumers and professionals to do more on-the-go from laptops, tablets, and other mobile devices. Both devices will be available to AT&T customers this summer.

AT&T recently announced plans to roll out its 4G LTE network in five markets – Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio – later this summer. With the AT&T Mobile Hotspot Elevate 4G and the AT&T USBConnect Momentum 4G, customers with 4G LTE coverage in those markets will be able to enjoy 4G LTE speeds as the network is rolled out in the coming weeks. Outside of the 4G LTE footprint, these devices will access AT&T’s HSPA+ network, providing consistently fast mobile broadband speeds. AT&T has announced plans to offer 4G LTE service to customers in at least 15 markets, covering 70 million Americans, by the end of 2011.

Several new features make the AirLink GX400 gateway stand out. EDC Technologies uses a unique wireless controller technology to monitor its customers’ hot water systems to align boiler supply with actual usage. Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) and GeaCom, Inc. today announced that GeaCom has selected a Sierra Wireless AirPrime™ embedded wireless module to provide the 3G wireless connection for GeaCom’s handheld multilingual medical communication system, called Phrazer®. The first system of its kind in the world, Phrazer is a handheld touchscreen device that helps patients and caregivers overcome differences in language, culture, or literacy to exchange critical medical information. With the integrated AirPrime MC8355 embedded wireless module, the Phrazer device can instantly access and update patient information within an electronic health records (EHR) system, even at an accident site or while in transit to hospital, using a cellular data network.

Phrazer addresses key elements of patient-centered care by facilitating communication and understanding between patients and caregivers. Communication barriers often result in errors in medication and treatment, misdiagnoses, and caregiver mistakes that can cause the patient serious harm or even death. According to a 2003 study, an average of 31 interpreter errors occur per encounter with patients who have limited English proficiency. Of those errors, 63% result in clinical consequences.¹

“Caregivers struggle to provide high quality healthcare to non-English speaking patients. The patient-entered information is then summarized into the caregiver’s language and can be accessed on the device or through the facility’s EHR system.

With embedded mobile broadband capability, they no longer need to spend valuable time searching for and accessing WiFi hotspots.

The Fujitsu LIFEBOOK platforms utilize the new Sierra Wireless AirPrime MC8305 and MC8355 embedded wireless modules. The AirPrime™ MC8305 and the AirPrime MC8355 are based on the Gobi3000™ reference design by Qualcomm. The AirPrime MC8305 is a single-mode HSPA module, and the AirPrime MC8355 is a dual-mode version, offering support for both HSPA and CDMA networks. Sierra Wireless introduces first 4G LTE AirLink™ Intelligent Gateway

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) today announced a 4G LTE multi-purpose wireless gateway that leverages the power of the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network. The Sierra Wireless AirLink™ GX440 – the first 4G version of the recently announced AirLink GX400 – delivers the higher bandwidth required by applications including high-quality wireless video surveillance, multi-data-stream wireless connections to branch locations, or mobile office applications for public safety and field service activities. Sierra Wireless is showcasing the AirLink GX440 gateway in the Sierra Wireless stand (1670) at CTIA Wireless, which runs until March 24 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. The AirLink GX440 gateway is expected to be available in the second half of this year.

To help facilitate the 3G-to-4G transition, Sierra Wireless also announced a technology upgrade program that will reduce customer risk by allowing customers to purchase an AirLink GX400 3G gateway now and upgrade to the AirLink GX440 when it becomes available.

Verizon Wireless and Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) today announced a new collaboration to co-market the Sierra Wireless AirVantage™ Cloud Platform, a comprehensive cloud-based platform for developing, deploying and operating the next generation of connected devices and M2M applications.

The solution combines Sierra Wireless’ global M2M leadership and AirVantage Platform with Verizon Wireless’ reliable wireless network and Machine to Machine Management Center to provide a complete platform for M2M solution development.
