Panasonic Selects Sierra Wireless 4G LTE Modules for Toughpad™ A1 Tablet in North America

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) and Panasonic today announced that Sierra Wireless will provide 4G LTE internal modems in the new rugged Toughpad™ A1 (#Toughpad), Android™-powered business tablet. The purpose-built slate, scheduled to start shipping in the spring of 2012, targets mission-critical and highly mobile workers in markets like aviation, construction, field sales and the public sector, where exposure to extreme environments is a constant challenge and the consequence of a failure is significant.

The 10” Toughpad A1, which features embedded security, enhanced device-management features, and integrated GPS, allows government and commercial enterprises, as well as small and medium businesses, to realize the true potential of tablet computing without sacrificing security and while delivering a high return on investment.

With integrated 4G LTE connectivity, Panasonic customers will be able to access stored online information and file reports from the field, share photos, stream video, and perform other high-bandwidth applications. For example, a technician addressing a particular problem on a piece of equipment would be able to use the Toughpad A1 tablet to access a training video stored on a corporate intranet, potentially saving considerable downtime and travel costs for multiple trips.

Integrating LTE into a mobile device presents challenges for manufacturers. Sierra Wireless, Inc. receives TSX approval for Normal Course Issuer Bid

Sierra Wireless, Inc. (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) (“Sierra Wireless” or the “Company”) today announced that it has received approval from the Toronto Stock Exchange (“TSX”) of its Notice of Intention to Make a Normal Course Issuer Bid (the “Bid”).

Pursuant to the Bid, Sierra Wireless may purchase for cancellation up to 1,564,914 of its common shares (“Common Shares”), or approximately 5% of the Common Shares outstanding as of the date of this announcement (representing 6.3% of the public float). As of December 1, 2011, there were 31,298,297 Common Shares of Sierra Wireless issued and outstanding, and the public float consisted of 24,975,375 Common Shares.

The purchases will be made by Sierra Wireless through the facilities and in accordance with the rules of the TSX and Rule 10b-18 under the U.S. Securities Exchange Act of 1934 (“Rule 10b-18”), and the price which Sierra Wireless will pay for any such Common Shares will be the market price at the time of acquisition. Sierra Wireless will make no purchases of Common Shares other than open market purchases or other means approved by the TSX. Other than block purchases allowable under the TSX rules, purchases will be subject to a daily restriction of 9,060 Common Shares, being 25% of the average daily trading volume for the preceding six months. In addition, purchases of Common Shares through the facilities of the Nasdaq Stock Market (“Nasdaq”) will be made in compliance with Rule 10b-18, which contains similar restrictions on the number of shares that may be repurchased based on the average daily trading volumes of the Common Shares on Nasdaq, subject to certain exceptions for block purchases. AirPrime AR Series modules were designed and developed to achieve the highest level of compliance with automotive specifications, providing an unmatched level of quality and performance under harsh operating conditions.

The new platform, called the ACU-II (ACTIA Connect Unit second generation), uses the AirPrime module to allow drivers to connect and manage various functions of vehicles through a smartphone application, giving them the ability to, for example, lock or unlock their doors or turn on the heater. It also provides compliance with European and Russian eCall requirements and enables stolen vehicle tracking functionality to meet regulations in other areas such as Brazil.

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) and the Eclipse Foundation today announced the formation of a new Industry Working Group to define and implement an open standard platform for the software development tools used in developing machine-to-machine (M2M) communications applications. IBM and Eurotech are also founding members of the M2M Industry Working Group, which is open to any organization with an interest in M2M solutions, including both vendors and potential clients.

“M2M communications represents an exciting and challenging opportunity to positively impact the way our world operates in fields as varied as energy management, transportation, and healthcare,” said Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation. “We believe the formation of this M2M Industry Working Group comes at a critical time. The open source contributions of M2M tools and protocols will help to reduce development time and costs, and ensure that mission critical systems maintain interoperability as deployments evolve over the lifetime of a project.”

The market for M2M solutions is growing, but rapid growth is hindered by incompatible platforms and protocols that require developers to continually reinvent solutions that have already been created. This situation slows innovation and creates maintenance and upgrade problems as deployments evolve over time. The founding members of the Industry Working Group believe the creation of open tools, open protocols, open interfaces and open application programming interfaces (APIs) are the best approach to addressing these problems, bringing tremendous value to the M2M ecosystem.

The M2M Industry Working Group is the umbrella for M2M-related Eclipse projects for open source, the first of which is the Koneki project. The goal of Koneki is to provide M2M solution developers with tools that ease the development, simulation, testing/debugging and deployment of such solutions. The initial open source contributions provide a common set of tools and APIs that simplify development of solutions across multiple environments (such as Linux, Java, and proprietary environments such as Open AT® from Sierra Wireless), as well as standard communications protocols. The benefit to M2M customers is more flexibility, with systems that are interoperable and don’t lock them into a long-term relationship with a single solution vendor. Sierra Wireless has made the first significant contribution to the Koneki project, providing a full-featured embedded development environment for the Lua programming language.

“We consider it critically important to provide the M2M developer community with the tools and support needed to deploy applications as efficiently as possible, and ensure that they can be easily maintained over time. The Sierra Wireless AirPrime™ MC7700 embedded wireless module has achieved technical approval for the AT&T 4G LTE network, and the Sierra Wireless AirPrime MC7750 module has achieved technical approval for the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network, clearing the way for shipments to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) building products with integrated 4G connectivity on either of the major U.S.-based LTE networks.

Embedded modules that have achieved operator technical approval provide OEMs with greater confidence that devices integrating the modules will pass network certification tests, as the majority of the test cases have already been completed. This also accelerates time-to-market and reduces network certification costs for OEMs. OEMs working with Sierra Wireless modules also now have the opportunity to efficiently and cost-effectively provide a choice of network services with their products, as the AirPrime MC7700 and AirPrime MC7750 share a common hardware and software interface.

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) and GeaCom, Inc. today announced that GeaCom has selected a Sierra Wireless AirPrime™ embedded wireless module to provide the 3G wireless connection for GeaCom’s handheld multilingual medical communication system, called Phrazer®. The first system of its kind in the world, Phrazer is a handheld touchscreen device that helps patients and caregivers overcome differences in language, culture, or literacy to exchange critical medical information. With the integrated AirPrime MC8355 embedded wireless module, the Phrazer device can instantly access and update patient information within an electronic health records (EHR) system, even at an accident site or while in transit to hospital, using a cellular data network.

Phrazer addresses key elements of patient-centered care by facilitating communication and understanding between patients and caregivers. Communication barriers often result in errors in medication and treatment, misdiagnoses, and caregiver mistakes that can cause the patient serious harm or even death. According to a 2003 study, an average of 31 interpreter errors occur per encounter with patients who have limited English proficiency. Of those errors, 63% result in clinical consequences.¹

The Mk7B is targeted to serve the global, low cost and high volume smart residential meter market. It includes an integrated modular pod-based system that allows EDMI to provide a cost-effective wireless point-to-point connection, simplifying maintenance in the field and providing remote management, upgrades, and configuration over the air.

Sierra Wireless introduces first 4G LTE AirLink™ Intelligent Gateway

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) today announced a 4G LTE multi-purpose wireless gateway that leverages the power of the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network. The Sierra Wireless AirLink™ GX440 – the first 4G version of the recently announced AirLink GX400 – delivers the higher bandwidth required by applications including high-quality wireless video surveillance, multi-data-stream wireless connections to branch locations, or mobile office applications for public safety and field service activities. Sierra Wireless is showcasing the AirLink GX440 gateway in the Sierra Wireless stand (1670) at CTIA Wireless, which runs until March 24 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. To help facilitate the 3G-to-4G transition, Sierra Wireless also announced a technology upgrade program that will reduce customer risk by allowing customers to purchase an AirLink GX400 3G gateway now and upgrade to the AirLink GX440 when it becomes available.

LANCOM selects Sierra Wireless to provide LTE and HSPA+ connectivity for business routers

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR; TSX: SW) today announced that LANCOM, a leading German manufacturer of enterprise network solutions, has selected Sierra Wireless AirPrime™ intelligent embedded modules to provide wireless network connectivity for its new line of 4G cellular broadband VPN routers. LANCOM can now offer its large enterprise, midsize business, and public sector customers several new router options to take advantage of 4G wireless broadband connectivity.

The LANCOM 1681-4G, using the AirPrime MC7710 embedded module, will support the latest LTE networks and speeds of up to 100 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload. The LANCOM 1780EW-3G uses the AirPrime MC8705 to connect with the fastest HSPA+ networks in the world, delivering download speeds up to 21 Mbps. The LANCOM OAP-321-3G, using the AirPrime MC8705 embedded module, combines Internet access via cellular networks with high-speed 802.11n wireless LAN and comes in a rugged IP-67 outdoor housing.

The routers will provide LANCOM’s enterprise customers with the robust, reliable cellular broadband connectivity their businesses demand. Customers can use the solutions as a backup to their wired networks or, thanks to the emergence of 4G connection speeds comparable to cable and ADSL, in place of wired connectivity.

Mastering complex 4G engineering
The mobile industry is buzzing about the potential of 4G technologies, and LTE in particular, to dramatically boost connection speeds, lower latency, and lower cost per bit. Making these technologies work in real-world applications, however, remains a challenge. Given the novelty of HSPA+ and LTE technologies, networks capable of supporting these high-speed connections are still unavailable in many areas. To allow customers to take advantage of the fastest available networks with their router products, LANCOM needs multi-mode router solutions that support both 3G and 4G networks.

LANCOM also must address the reality that each operator implements LTE differently, using different frequency bands for both the 4G network and 3G fallback, each of which requires specific antenna configurations. Developing a solution that incorporates the most possible technology combinations (a necessity if the solution will be applicable for multiple regions and operators), and does so with the minimum hardware possible, is an immensely challenging engineering problem. If LANCOM had to use different modules from multiple vendors to accomplish this, for example, this would radically increase the complexity of the design and engineering process, and add significant costs and time to bring the products to market.

Sierra Wireless LTE and HSPA+ modules address all of these complexities and provide a comprehensive, global communications solution. Both the AirPrime MC7710 and MC8801 embedded modules offer multi-mode connectivity and software, providing support for all common 2G, 3G and 4G networks across multiple frequency bands. The modules also include heat, power and high speed interface design considerations to function optimally across multiple network technologies.

New Sierra Wireless AirCard® USB modems for 4G networks are fast, good-looking, and flexible

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR; TSX: SW) today introduced the AirCard® 319U and the AirCard 320U, the two newest 4G USB modems in its AirCard product line.

The AirCard 319U USB modem is the newest product in its lineup for Dual-Carrier HSPA+ networks. Scheduled to launch on the TELUS network in Canada in March, the AirCard 319U USB offers download speeds of up to 42 megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds of up to 5.76 Mbps. It also features an innovative swivel hinge design that allows the body of the modem to be tucked up against the side of the notebook and protects it from being damaged by accidental bumps, for easier and safer use in tight spaces like commuter trains and crowded cafes.

The AirCard 320U is Sierra Wireless’ first in a family of USB modems for LTE networks, offering download speeds of up to 100 Mbps and upload speeds up to 50 Mbps. Its design, which is based on the AirCard 312U USB modem that launched in August 2010 for DC-HSPA+ networks, is thinner and more user-friendly than competitive LTE products currently available, with an articulating and pivoting hinge that works with the widest possible variety of USB port placements. AirCard USB modems for LTE networks are scheduled for commercial availability in the second quarter of this year.

AirPrime wireless modules can also be remotely managed thanks to AirPrime Management Services, a comprehensive set of device management capabilities. Developer Studio: The Sierra Wireless Embedded Developer Studio is an integrated development environment for M2M applications, based on Eclipse™. It integrates the entire development process into a single tool, including coding, debugging, target download, and target monitoring. Sierra Wireless introduces two new 4G mobile hotspots

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR; TSX: SW) today introduced two new 4G mobile hotspots to its line of AirCard® Mobile Broadband Devices. Designed to take advantage of high-speed mobile broadband connectivity offered by new 4G networks, the AirCard 753S and AirCard 754S Mobile Hotspots connect up to five Wi-Fi enabled devices simultaneously to the internet over Dual-Carrier HSPA+ and LTE networks, respectively. Both products are scheduled for commercial shipments in the second quarter of this year.

The AirCard 753S and AirCard 754S Mobile Hotspots are about the size of a deck of cards, remarkably lightweight, and easy to set up and use – with no software to install, the average user can be connected in less than one minute. An integrated LCD display provides all the necessary information, including WiFi access information, battery life, network signal strength, and the number of devices connected. Audible alerts and an intuitive web interface also provide easy monitoring of device status. The web interface, which can be accessed easily from any common web browser, provides an intuitive way for users to change the hotspot’s administrative and security settings.

“When you combine a mobile hotspot with 4G speeds, you get a very flexible and useful device that can serve multiple needs, from work on-the-go with an offsite team, to a family internet hub at a vacation spot or in the car,” said Dan Schieler, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Mobile Computing for Sierra Wireless. “With their integrated screens and intuitive setup, the Sierra Wireless AirCard 753S and AirCard 754S get customers up and running in a snap on virtually any WiFi-enabled device.”

In areas where 4G network coverage is not available, both models automatically switch over to 3G networks, ensuring continuous connectivity and roaming across network boundaries. The vastly improved speeds offered by 4G networks provide users with plenty of bandwidth, even when shared across multiple devices. The AirCard 753S offers downlink speeds of up to 42 Mbps (megabits per second) and uplink speeds of up to 5.76 Mbps on a DC-HSPA+ network. The AirCard 754S offers downlink speeds of up to 100 Mbps and uplink speeds of up to 50 Mbps when operating on an LTE network.

For the first time, Sierra Wireless will also offer a suite of accessories designed to enhance the performance and functionality of the new mobile hotspots. Planned accessories include car chargers, silicone skins, extended batteries, and cradles with integrated antennas for indoor use and desktop charging.

Bringing New Solutions to Market

KPN and Sierra Wireless will jointly market the AirVantage Platform and KPN’s M2M services. Companies building connected devices and applications can control their entire solution from a single user interface, under a single billing arrangement.

Schneider Electric, a global leader in energy infrastructure and management, is the first customer to take advantage of the new KPN/Sierra Wireless M2M cloud platform. The company is launching a line of connected charging stations to support the new wave of electric vehicles in Europe.

The KPN/Sierra Wireless M2M cloud platform will allow Schneider Electric to manage charging stations in the field as part of a single system. It will also facilitate the rapid development of applications for their use—including power monitoring, billing, charging station reservations or any other capability that could benefit Schneider Electric customers. For example, the AirVantage Platform’s Smart Automation extension simplifies the configuration and connection to the charging stations using a standard industrial protocol. 50 million wireless modules

In the fourth quarter of 2010, Sierra Wireless shipped its 50 millionth embedded wireless module. The milestone delivery rounded off an excellent year for the Sierra Wireless module business, with a number of new product introductions and a series of major customer wins. In 2010, Sierra Wireless became the world's number one wireless module vendor, with a 33% market share in the first half of the year (source: iSuppli).

The 50 millionth module shipment is the result of more than a decade of continuous innovation. The world's first cellular wireless module, WISMO1A, saw the day of light in January 1997. It was a dual-sided 40 x 64 mm device operating on the 900 MHz GSM band only. It ran on an ARM6 processor, and attained peak data speeds of 9.6 Kbps. At the time, it was an impressive industrial achievement – but the span is wide to the feature sets of today’s Sierra Wireless modules, which include air interfaces up to LTE, GPS support, embedded SIM, application processing capabilities, and remote device management, to mention but a few.

Philippe Guillemette, Chief Technology Officer of Sierra Wireless, was part of the engineering team that created the first wireless module 14 years ago. He comments: “The concept of the wireless module, which integrates all the technology needed to communicate via cellular networks into a single device, made mobile communications technology available to a host of new players. Manufacturers and system integrators no longer needed to be wireless experts in order to incorporate cellular connectivity in their products and solutions. This spurred an explosion of innovation which I don’t think anyone could have foreseen – and the benefits are countless, from improved business processes to energy efficiency and even the ability to save lives."
