Sierra Wireless AirLink® in-vehicle GPS gateways and routers now support Garmin’s Fleet Management Interface

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR; TSX: SW) today announced that the company has completed integration of Garmin’s Fleet Management Interface (FMI) into its line of AirLink® Intelligent Gateways and Routers. The Garmin FMI, version 2.0 is supported by the AirLink PinPoint XT, PinPoint X, MP890, MP597 and MP895.

Together, the Sierra Wireless AirLink in-vehicle platforms and the Garmin FMI provide customers with a comprehensive, value-driven mobile solution for location based services, driver communications, vehicle telemetry and fleet management by combining a highly intelligent mobile communications platform with an easy-to-use Garmin Personal Navigation Device (PND).

Sierra Wireless has integrated the Garmin FMI into ALEOS™ embedded intelligence, which powers AirLink devices, creating a quick path to market for a total in-vehicle communications environment. IntelliGo enables any device with Wi-Fi connectivity, and up to five devices simultaneously, to connect to the Time Warner Cable 4G Mobile Network and a nationwide 3G network for internet access on the go. While on the Time Warner Cable 4G network, customers using Road Runner Mobile™ can get internet speeds up to 6 Mbps (megabits per second) on the fastest mobile broadband network available.

PFK and inthinc enhance road safety with Sierra Wireless AirPrime™ Intelligent Embedded Modules

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR; TSX: SW) is helping PFK of South Africa and inthinc of Salt Lake City, enhance road safety by ensuring their devices can reliably connect to central systems in real time. This is made possible with Sierra Wireless AirPrime WMP100 Intelligent Embedded Modules.

PFK’s Autowatch Wireless Alcohol Breathalyzer (WAB) system prevents alcohol-impaired drivers from circulating on public roads and endangering the safety of others. Before starting a vehicle equipped with the Autowatch system, the driver must breathe into a breathalyzer which will analyze the sample, determine whether the driver’s alcohol concentration is above the specified legal limit, and transmit the result to a vehicle blocking system (VBS). If the alcohol concentration is below the legal limit, the VBS will disarm the immobilizer and allow the vehicle to start, but if not, the vehicle will remain in the immobilized state. By adding a cellular connection to the Autowatch WAB, the system can immediately communicate exceptional events, such as an attempt to push start the vehicle, to a control station or a fleet manager.

Simultaneously, thanks to the cellular connection provided by the AirPrime WMP100 Embedded Module, parents and fleet owners can be notified of the driver’s current location, actions and driving performance through text, voicemail or email. All driving information is reported and stored on a web portal for later review.

Sierra Wireless leads global market in Cellular M2M Communications

Sierra Wireless, Inc. (NASDAQ: SWIR; TSX: SW) has dramatically expanded its market share for embedded modules and standalone wireless terminals, and is now the worldwide market leader in cellular Machine-to-Machine (“M2M”) communication devices.

Building on the successful acquisition of Wavecom in March 2009, Sierra Wireless M2M communication devices – including AirPrime™ Intelligent Embedded Modules and AirLink™ Intelligent Routers and Gateways – enjoyed significant revenue growth throughout 2009 and continue to gain momentum in 2010. M2M product revenues totaled $221 million for the full year of 2009 (42 percent of total Sierra Wireless sales), representing the highest revenue of any cellular M2M communication product supplier in the world. In the first quarter of 2010, M2M product revenue increased further to $88.7 million, nearly tripling from the first quarter of 2009, and now accounts for more than half of Sierra Wireless’ total sales.

Sierra Wireless launches new AirPrime™ Intelligent Embedded Module for China Mobile TD-SCDMA network

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR; TSX: SW) today announced the launch of a new product in its AirPrime™ Q Series of intelligent embedded modules. The Sierra Wireless AirPrime Q2668 is designed for the TD-SCDMA network of China Mobile, which has selected Sierra Wireless as a module development partner. Footprint compatible with all other AirPrime Q Series wireless modules, the AirPrime Q2668 is an industrial grade wireless module which lets Sierra Wireless customers rapidly extend their machine-to-machine (M2M) applications to the Chinese market.

The AirPrime Q2668 is a dual-mode TD-SCDMA HSDPA/EDGE module which enables data transmission speeds of up to 2.8 Mbps on the downlink and 384 Kbps on the uplink. It operates on the 1880-1920/2010-2025MHz TD-SCDMA bands and the 900/1800 GSM/GPRS/EDGE bands, and supports both USB 2.0 and serial port (RS232) interfaces, commonly used for industrial applications. It is controlled through an AT command interface.

The module contains an embedded protocol based on China Mobile’s Wireless Machine-to-Machine Protocol, Version 3.0 (WMMP 3.0). Fully tested and certified, the protocol allows manufacturers to rapidly develop and deploy M2M applications for use on China Mobile’s network without having to perform extensive development and testing, resulting in much faster time to market.

In addition, the WMMP 3.0 communication standard enables the connection of devices to the China Mobile M2M Platform, which allows users to manage and monitor M2M terminals in real-time, to communicate effectively via GPRS/SMS/USSD.

Thanks to the high sensitivity of the Sierra Wireless XM0110 and its integrated A-GPS functionality, all of the new PFK products will be able to use an internal GPS antenna. This facilitates the installation and reduces the traceability of the product.

The AirPrime SL6087 features quad-band (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) EDGE connectivity and an extended temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). It can be used as a simple modem controlled via AT commands, or it can host and natively execute the customer’s standard ANSI C/C++ application in addition to the communications function, eliminating the need for an additional processor and reducing the total size and cost of the final product. The AirPrime SL6087 module is also delivered with the full set of Plug-Ins for Open AT® OS, enabling users to easily add TCP/IP and Internet, security, Lua scripting language and Companion GPS capabilities.

The AirPrime SL8080 (850/1900 MHz), AirPrime SL8082 (900/2100 MHz) and AirPrime SL8084 (850/2100 MHz) offer high-speed HSDPA connectivity in the same standard LGA form factor as the AirPrime SL6087. They all support Sierra Wireless Watcher, a simple and easy to use connection manager which minimizes installation time, supports a fast connection experience, and reduces the number and duration of technical support calls, enhancing customer experience and reducing costs.

All AirPrime SL Series products are available with Embedded SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) as an option. Embedded SIM is a fully industrialized and personalized component SIM solution that removes the plastic from a conventional SIM card. The SIM function is integrated into the module itself, ensuring proper functioning in harsh environments and reducing the risk of disconnected devices. Embedded SIM also simplifies the logistics associated with SIM card inventory, and eliminates the risk of SIM card theft.

For increased efficiency and simplicity in remote device management, AirPrime SL Series modules can be managed with Sierra Wireless AirVantage™ Management Services for AirPrime. Sierra Wireless first to deliver enhanced mobile broadband experience with Windows 7 Device Stage support

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR; TSX: SW) today announced that the Sierra Wireless AirCard® product line now provides a Windows 7 Device Stage experience across multiple devices. Sierra Wireless is the first mobile broadband modem vendor to deploy a Device Stage experience, which provides customers with more convenient, intuitive access to their device and account information. In addition, Device Stage provides network operators selling Sierra Wireless AirCard devices with an opportunity to connect directly with customers through Device Stage in Windows 7.

With Device Stage support, when customers insert an AirCard mobile broadband modem into a laptop, they get quick access to AirCard modem information and support, including direct access to software and firmware updates. A picture of the Sierra Wireless AirCard device appears automatically in the “Devices and Printers” window accessed from the Start menu. Clicking on this picture opens the Device Stage, presenting a rich home page-type menu that can act as a go-to information center for device specific information such as current status, available network connections, and direct support links.

DNA and Sierra Wireless to launch co-operation in mobile broadband

As of today, DNA will offer its customers even faster connections with modern Mokkula modem devices supplied by Sierra Wireless. This is the first time Sierra Wireless USB modems have been available in Finland. The sales package has been tailored according to DNA’s customers’ wishes by including an external antenna.

– Since our aim is to offer the best to our customers at all times, we keep a close eye on the advances of terminal devices. The time is right for presenting Sierra Wireless now, as its HSPA+ capability allows for introducing ever-higher speeds. Our HSPA+ network is expanding at a good pace, says Pekka Väisänen, Vice President, Consumer Business at DNA.

The HSPA+ upgrade has facilitated the use of wireless internet connection with speeds of several megabits per second in favourable conditions, and with suitable terminal devices.

The theoretical maximum data rate of the DNA Mokkula USB 309 modem, supplied by Sierra Wireless, is 21 Mbps, which equals the theoretical maximum speed of DNA’s network at the moment. Online services can now be fully utilised, thanks to high speeds and good connection quality.

– Lower rates suffice for browsing the Internet, but, for instance, viewing videos highlights the benefits of a high-speed connection, Väisänen says.

Sierra Wireless works in partnership with many large global companies in data communications, including Telefonica, O2, Telstra, Sprint, and AT&T.

- We are excited to collaborate with DNA to launch HSPA+ mobile broadband technology in the Finnish market. – Our customers, such as sailors and hikers, who frequent places where getting good reception can be challenging, have been asking for wireless modems with external antennas. There are 4.6 million Finns living in our 3G network coverage area, but many of them travel to entirely unpopulated areas. We want to be able to serve them as well, states Väisänen.

In addition to the antenna, the new DNA Mokkula modem comes with a slot for a microSD™ memory card, and it is compatible with most common operating systems, such as Windows® 7 and Mac OS® X 10.6.1.

The new device, DNA Mokkula USB 309, is available from DNA shops starting from today, 10th March. Customers who purchase the new modem and DNA’s 2 Mbit mobile broadband on a fixed contract of 24 months will be able to use the Full Rate service for no extra fee. The service enables connection at the highest maximum speed allowed by the network.

Fujitsu selects Sierra Wireless for notebook connectivity

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR - TSX: SW) and Fujitsu today announced that Fujitsu selected Sierra Wireless to provide 3G mobile broadband for several new models in its LIFEBOOK series notebooks.

The tablet PCs LIFEBOOK T900, T4410, T4310, and the notebooks LIFEBOOK P770, S760, E780, S710, AH550 and P3110 utilize Qualcomm’s Gobi™ Global Mobile Internet technology, provided by Sierra Wireless. Sierra Wireless and Telefónica collaborate to demonstrate innovative cloud computing service for mobile customers

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR; TSX: SW) today announced a successful collaboration with Telefónica to demonstrate an innovative cloud computing application at Mobile World Congress this week in Barcelona, Spain.

Using the Sierra Wireless AirCard® 310U USB modem, the 3GBox demonstration in the Telefónica stand showcases a unique product and service combination wherein a customer would be provided with an online storage vault accessed directly via the USB modem. 3GBox is a simple way to store, access, and share files online. Installation of the required software for the online storage service is provided directly from the device, which also connects automatically to the user’s password-protected storage file whenever the AirCard 310U is inserted into to the computer.

3GBox provides virtually unlimited storage without the fear of data loss that might occur if a USB key was misplaced or a notebook computer was stolen. With HSPA+ download speeds of up to 21 megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds of up to 5.76 Mbps on the Telefónica network, the Sierra Wireless AirCard 310U USB modem would allow 3GBox customers to use the online storage almost as if it was local, making the most of their time wherever they happen to be.

Targeting industrial, sales and payment and security solutions, the two companies present a truly ready-to-use package which greatly facilitates the development, logistics and management of M2M solutions.

The offer gives access to Bouygues Telecom ready-to-use pan-European data airtime on the new Sierra Wireless AirLink™ GL6100 GSM/GPRS modem with Embedded SIM. In addition, the offer includes a one year subscription to Sierra Wireless’ AirVantage™ Management Services for remote diagnosis and software upgrades.

Sierra Wireless advances HSPA+ product portfolio with support for Dual-Carrier HSPA+

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR; TSX: SW) today introduced an upcoming product portfolio advancing its HSPA+ product line with a selection of products to support customers migrating to dual-carrier HSPA+ technology, effectively doubling the speeds of devices currently available. The Sierra Wireless AirCard® 312U USB modem is scheduled for commercial release later this year from Telstra in Australia. Other Dual-Carrier HSPA+ products, including Sierra Wireless AirPrime™ embedded modules, are planned to follow.

Dual-carrier HSPA+ doubles the speeds of current HSPA+ networks from a theoretical maximum of 21 megabits per second (Mbps) to 42 Mbps, making them more efficient and providing a better experience for customers with more consistent network performance. The new Sierra Wireless AirCard® 312U USB modem is a key component in several Dual-Carrier HSPA+ demonstrations at Mobile World Congress 2010, which opens today and runs through February 18 in Barcelona, Spain. In collaboration with Telstra and Ericsson, demonstrations of Dual-Carrier HSPA+ utilizing the AirCard 312U USB modem will take place in the Ericsson and the GSMA (8C118) stands. In addition, Anritsu is demonstrating the Sierra Wireless AirCard 312U USB modem with Anritsu test equipment at the Anritsu stand (1B31).

New Sierra Wireless Services Platform overcomes management barriers to connecting millions of consumer devices

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR - TSX: SW) today announced a new major release of M2M Studio, a fully integrated environment for the development of embedded machine-to-machine (M2M) software, enabling developers to create, develop, compile, download, debug and test their applications.

M2M Studio 1.1.1 offers a series of enhancements and additions, including a new software redistribution feature which enables developers to create their own embedded software plug-ins and make them accessible to other M2M Studio users. Sierra Wireless AirCard® USB 307 modem launches on new Telefónica HSPA+ network in Spain

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR - TSX: SW) today announced the Sierra Wireless AirCard® USB 307 modem is now available in Spain for the new HSPA+ mobile broadband network operated by Telefónica. Initially offered in Madrid and Barcelona, Telefónica has announced plans to expand HSPA+ support to cover about 78 percent of the population by the end of 2010.

The AirCard USB 307 modem features download speeds of up to 21 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 5.76 Mbps on the 900 and 2100 MHz HSPA bands commonly used in Europe. It can also roam globally on UMTS and GSM/EDGE networks, making it an excellent choice for mobile professionals or digital nomads looking to take advantage of the best possible network speeds in a variety of locations as they travel worldwide.

Designed for HSPA networks, the MC8795V offers quad-band (850, 900, 1900, and 2100 MHz) frequency band support, enabling customers to expand their product offering into new geographical markets. The MC8795V also features best-in-class data speeds with up to 7.2 Mbps on the downlink and 5.76 Mbps on the uplink. In addition, antenna diversity improves fringe performance on global HSPA networks.

The MC8795V module easily integrates into a variety of OEM devices, such as wireless terminals, point-of-sale devices, computers and ruggedized laptops. It is also GPS capable, making it well suited for location-based applications. Its voice capabilities makes it ideal for fixed wireless terminals and portable handheld devices that require the ability to make voice calls. It supports simultaneous voice and data usage.

The MC8795V is 100% compatible with the existing tri-band MC8790V and MC8792V embedded modules, providing a seamless upgrade path. Vodacom launches a new vehicle tracking SIM card for South Africa

Vodacom, South Africa’s leading cellular network, together with Tracker and Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR - TSX: SW), has launched a world first with the introduction of a next generation SIM card for vehicle tracking, based on the inSIM® technology from Sierra Wireless.

The inSIM® embedded SIM component was designed and developed by Wavecom, now part of Sierra Wireless, a leading provider of wireless solutions for M2M (machine-to-machine) communication and mobile computing. This new technology will be deployed by Vodacom and will be used by Tracker, South Africa’s leading stolen vehicle recovery and fleet management company. Vodacom provides Tracker with its network services.

Sierra Wireless’ innovative inSIM® is a unique solution which embeds the SIM function into the Wireless CPU® at the component level, eliminating the use of the traditional plastic SIM card thus reducing the ability for third parties to tamper with the SIM card.
