Managing Meters Better

EDMI has been a Sierra Wireless partner since 2004 with large GPRS smart meter deployments throughout the UK. These initial projects have been followed by several major deployments of smart metering solutions in Europe, South East Asia, Australia and Africa. One of the last successes has been the deployment of smart meters and smart metering infrastructure starting in 2008 for a major power utility in New Zealand. The solution enhances the efficiency of electric power distribution and provides additional smart services to end customers who can start controlling their power consumption in real time. This contract – with more than 500,000 end points to connect – is now one of the largest GPRS smart meter rollouts in Asia Pacific. The collaboration between EDMI and Sierra Wireless calls for development of advanced GPRS and 3G technology applications to make cellular wireless networks the most reliable, cost effective and easy-to-use communication media for smart meters.
