Danish National Police Upgrades Their TETRA Network
The National Police serve the 5.4 million inhabitants of Denmark and houses the SINE Agency, responsible for migrating the country’s emergency communications to a single, nationwide TETRA network.
Challenges
A successful transition to the TETRA standard for its communications system required measuring the performance and coverage of the TETRA network in every corner of Denmark. Unfortunately, the pen-sized USB modems used to provide advanced 3G GSM/UMTS connectivity to in-vehicle probes were failing; the modems dislodged when driving through rough terrain, could not provide a strong enough wireless connection and were a drain on CPU power.
Solution
Sierra Wireless’ partner, Daimler Mobile Partner, worked with the Danish National Police to select the AirLink™ Raven XE 3G gateway, with a compact form factor and rugged design, as well as wide operational temperature ranges, to ensure ultimate performance in the harsh field environments where law enforcement vehicles regularly operate. The ability to run a high gain roof mounted antenna from the Raven XE also helps ensure sufficient 3G coverage, even in remote locations.
“The AirLink Raven XE did indeed solve our CPU issues, and - combined with a roof-mounted antenna - it is capable of providing service in greater areas,” said Nikolaj Marquart, member of the Danish National Police’s SINE Agency.
The unmatched ruggedness and reliability of the Raven XE was critical to the success of the National Police’s coordinated communications efforts during its first large scale event – the recent COP15 United Nations Climate Conference in Copenhagen.
The Danish National Police’s mobile network coverage measurement system produced the following benefits:
• Afforded device flexibility with support of numerous accessories to extend functionality
• Allowed for quick solution integration and minimal power consumption through remote control provided by AirLink Device Management tools
• Built to rugged specifications for the harshest environmental conditions
• Provided secure, reliable connectivity through ALEOS intelligence
