PSA Peugeot Citroën has long been a leader in advanced automotive technology and the car maker has been collaborating with Wavecom (recently purchased by Sierra Wireless) on telematics solutions for well over ten years. Today, more than 600,000 PSA cars on the road are equipped with telematics technology in one form or another.

Challenges

Through the emergence of new mobile communication technology, using on-board telematics functionality, leading car manufacturers, like PSA Peugeot Citroën, can now propose new in-vehicle services for enhanced safety and a better mobility.

More and more new car models are being equipped at the factory with vehicle telematics systems which enable such consumer-oriented features as navigation, assistance and remote diagnostics.  

In addition to this and as software features in cars becomes increasingly prevalent, the capacity for over-the-air remote monitoring and updating becomes essential.

Solution

Starting in 2009 and over a four-year period, PSA Peugeot Citroën plans to equip more than half of a million cars with cellular communications capabilities.

PSA is deploying telematics functionality based on Sierra Wireless AirPrime Q2686 & WMP150 Intelligent Embedded Module and will use the Sierra Wireless Software Suite, offering a variety of features to customize solutions for the automotive industry.

In addition to this, PSA Peugeot Citroën Group has signed a contract to use Sierra Wireless device management services for the remote monitoring and software upgrade of future generations of cars equipped with Sierra Wireless-based telematics technology.

Cars typically have product life spans of 10 to 15 years, and once wireless connectivity has become a standard feature, long-term maintenance and monitoring becomes necessary.
