EDMI, headquartered in Singapore, is a modern international company that designs, manufactures and sells innovative and technologically advanced electronic Energy Meters, Advanaced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Systems and Metering System Software. EDMI has an extensive range of products for use in revenue applications across the Generation, Transmission and Distribution sectors of the electricity market as well as for Sub-metering and Energy Management applications.

EDMI has been a Sierra Wireless partner since 2004 with large GPRS smart meter deployments throughout the UK.

Challenges

The utility industry continues to look for solutions that reduce both labor and high maintenance costs of metering. To provide the best solution for these issues, EDMI searched for the right partner to help with customer opportunities in Europe, South East Asia, Australia and Africa.

Solution

Costly labor and maintenance cost issues can be resolved by efficiently managing meters remotely. EDMI, a leading manufacturer of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) systems, partnered with Sierra Wireless to offer a complete, cost effective solution for the AMI market.

In one particular rollout, EDMI partnered with Sierra Wireless to provide a wireless automatic meter management solution (AMM) for a leading utility in New Zealand. The 1st phase involved rolling out 55,000 EDMI's meters with Sierra Wireless wireless technology.
The solution enhances the efficiency of electric power distribution and provides additional smart services to end customers who can start controlling their power consumption in real time. This contract – with more than 500,000 end points to connect – is now one of the largest GPRS smart meter rollouts in Asia Pacific. The collaboration between EDMI and Sierra Wireless calls for development of advanced GPRS and 3G technology applications to make cellular wireless networks the most reliable, cost effective and easy-to-use communication media for smart meters.
